Sylvia was created with book by Kate Prince and Priya Parmer, and the music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde. The world-premiere production took place at the The Old Vic in London. The musical positions itself at the intersection of bold historical narrative and contemporary movement, setting the well-known suffrage story in a fresh aesthetic context.
The show follows Sylvia Pankhurst’s break with the mainstream women’s suffrage movement as she fights for working-class women’s rights, forms the East London Federation of Suffragettes and chooses a path of pacifism and socialism. It was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and won for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for the late-2023 London run.
This UK tour sees Beverley Knight and Sharon Rose to reprise their roles from the original production.
